Dear Women's League members and friends,
Welcome to September! It is my pleasure to invite you back to the activities and opportunities of the MIT Women’s League, as we look forward to starting our 111th year! In celebration and service to the MIT Community, we have planned an action-packed season ahead, with exciting programs and tours around campus.
Please join us as we kick off the season with our annual Open House on Wednesday, September 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Bush Room (10-105). This is always a great way to reconnect with old friends and meet new members of our community, while we showcase all the Women’s League has to offer -- from upcoming events to our many interest groups like fabric arts, a book group, and the MIT Women’s Chorale.
Our Breakfast Series returns on October 9, and in honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we will welcome guest speaker Sarah Gyorog, Executive Director of Transition House in Cambridge. Transition House was the first domestic violence shelter in the U.S. and is a long-term partner with MIT and the Women’s League.
We will continue throughout the fall with activities we know and love like the annual clothing drive, coffee socials, Wreath Making, and the Holiday Craft Fair, while introducing new opportunities including a workshop on Neurographica, a meditative drawing practice that enhances creativity and peace of mind, a session for all MIT staff on supporting small, diverse vendors, and brown bag lunches planned around informal discussions about current topics.
Our plans for the new year are also well underway and we are thrilled to announce our second post pandemic in-person Stratton Lecture on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. The topic of this year’s program is about the Epidemic of Loneliness, and Rebecca Saxe, the John W. Jarve (1978) Professor of Brain and Cognitive Science, who has studied the neural basis of isolation, will be our keynote speaker. She will be joined onstage by two other experts who will address the impacts of loneliness on the work environment and on our overall health.
Please stay tuned and stay in touch! We will be adding other new programming throughout the year and look forward to seeing you at our traditional home in the Emma Rogers Room and around campus! Be sure to keep an eye on our website and follow us on social media like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Slack. And of course, if you have questions, please drop us a line at wleague@mit.edu. We look forward to seeing you
soon!
Yours,
Nancye Mims
