About the English Partner Program:
MIT’s English Partner Program (EPP), is a program through MIT’s Women’s League which supports English Language Learners (ELLs) by pairing them with volunteer conversation partners for informal English practice.
The EPP runs from late September through early December and from February to May. Partners meet weekly or bi-weekly for 45 minutes to an hour, based on their schedules. It’s a great opportunity for ELLs to enhance their conversational English skills in a relaxed and supportive setting, and for volunteers to share your local knowledge and American culture. You are welcome to meet virtually, in person, or on a hybrid schedule that works for the two of you.

FAQ
What should we talk about?
EPP is a very informal program. You and your partner can decide how you would like to spend your time. Conversation partners have simply chatted about their week, practiced for language exams, discussed resources around New England and learned about each other’s cultures.
Can I bring my baby or small child?
Yes, please indicate in the form if you would like to bring your child.
What if I am not compatible with my language partner?
We understand that a good match involves everything from scheduling to personal connection. If your pairing isn’t working out for any reason, practical or personal, please contact Katrina Norman (pkatrina@mit.edu). We are happy to facilitate a new match.
Do I have to be a native English Speaker to volunteer?
Our volunteers act as both language partners and trusted guides for newcomers. You do not need to be a native English speaker to be effective in this role. In fact, your personal journey can be your greatest strength. The ideal candidate has:
- Empathy and a passion for helping others succeed.
- A strong, clear command of English, with the ability to communicate clearly and fluently.
- The life experience to help a newcomer navigate our community and American culture.
- A sense of being settled and comfortable in your own life here, which allows you to offer credible advice and support.
Who can participate?
Anyone connected to MIT is welcome to participate!
