Summer Food Care Package Event

August 30, 2018

In June, July & August, MIT Women’s League partnered with Student Support Services (SSS), the Division of Student Life and CASE offering food packages to CASE and Questbridge students who often struggle with food insecurity over the summer months when the dining halls close. It was a dedicated team effort each month to assemble 40 to 45 food packages for those students, and each month was a noteworthy success. The students who remained on campus expressed their gratitude to all involved.

A special thank you to Miri Skolnik, Assistant Dean from SSS, who coordinated the pre-planning, along with Emanuel Perez, ’19, representative for CASE food insecurity. Kudos to Renee Hellenbrecht, Shannon Hunt, Julia Lanigan, Erin Erhart, Brianna Giacoppe, Kate Quinn, Lyndsey Carpenter, Ray Feller, Miri Skolnik, Emanuel Perez, Joanne Cohn, Zahida Taher, Bonnie Jones, Ellen Stordy for all their help and support.

Volunteers represented a variety of MIT offices: Assistive Technology Information Center (ATIC), CASE, Chemistry, Libraries, Student Support Services (SSS), and the Women’s League. The outreach by volunteers to the summer events is to be admired. Many shared stories of their experience with their own humble college beginnings, and they understood and appreciated the needs of our MIT students. Giving back by volunteering has such a positive impact on our MIT students and enriches the MIT community.

This Fall, MIT dining and campus dining partners opened an at-cost grocery store for students, TechMart, open Monday to Friday in Walker Memorial, further helping to make MIT a food secure campus for all students. Autumn’s changing colors are a feast for the senses and a time to celebrate all we have been given.

MIT Women’s League will continue their partnership with Student Support Services as needed. November-December 2018
